How do you distinguish between slip ratings?
P1: The surface offers the lowest level of slip resistance. It's suitable for areas where it is always expected to be dry and where people remain mostly stationary.
P2: A slightly higher slip resistance than P1. Tiles with this rating may be used in areas that can become wet through condensation or occasional spills but are promptly cleaned up.
P3: Provides a moderate level of slip resistance. This rating is often considered appropriate for areas subject to wetting, like residential bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens, where occupants walk with increased care.
P4: Surfaces with this rating offer a good level of slip resistance. P4 rated tiles are often found in areas that are regularly wet, such as public bathrooms, commercial kitchens, and external common areas.
P5: This is the highest slip resistance classification and offers the highest level of protection against slipping when the surface is wet. P5 tiles are typically used in very high slip risk areas such as ramps, swimming pool surrounds, or other special use areas.
Will all my tiles look the same?
Not always. Tiles can have slight variations in colour, texture or pattern. There is due to several factors including the manufacturing process which involves mixing raw materials and glazing all the way to the installation process where factors like grout lines and spacing can introduce minor variations. The way light reflects on the tiles means the same wall tiles and floor tiles can even look different.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?
Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are popular choices for tiles. Ceramic tiles are made from a mixture of clay, minerals and water fired at high temperatures whereas porcelain tiles are more from more refined clay that is denser and fired at higher temperatures leading to greater durability. Porcelain tiles have a lower water absorption rate making it suitable for areas with greater exposure to water and generally tends to cost more.
What is the best way to determine the most suitable tiles?
We recommend purchasing samples (that can be redeemed as credit). It is important to note the actual tiles may differ from sample tiles due to a list of factors ranging from different batches and unavoidable inconsistencies in the raw materials.
What do the different variation ratings mean?
V1 - Uniform Appearance: Tiles with a V1 rating exhibit very little variation from tile to tile. You can expect them each to look very similar to one another, with consistent colour and pattern throughout.
V2 - Slight Variation: With a V2 rating, you'll notice some differences in texture, pattern, or colour among the tiles, but these are slight. The design intent is to mimic the appearance of natural materials which inherently have slight variations.
V3 - Moderate Variation: V3-rated tiles will have a noticeable amount of difference in their colour, texture, or imprinted pattern from tile to tile. This adds a greater degree of uniqueness to each tile, resulting in a more varied and natural-looking surface when the tiles are laid out.
V4 - Substantial Variation: Tiles marked with V4 will show a significant variation from piece to piece. When you use V4 tiles, the end result will be a very dynamic and random look, closely mimicking the natural variation you would find in materials like stone or wood.
