A diverter is needed when you have more than 1 outlet in the shower. Shower systems however have built-in diverters and only require the wall mixer.

Wall top assemblies feature a separate hot and cold handle whereas wall mixers combine the hot and cold to our handle. In essence the main difference lies in the ease of controlling the temperature. This depends on your aesthetic preference.
